Jewelry Store Owner Murdered in Gazipur Robbery Investigation Underway

GAZIPUR — Police discovered the body of a jewelry shop owner with his throat slit inside his business in the Signboard-Bhushirmil area of Gazipur city on Sunday afternoon.

The victim, 42-year-old Abul Kalam Azad, was the proprietor of Sadiya Jewelers. He was the son of Nona Mia from Bholain village in the Nangalkot Upazila of Cumilla. Authorities noted multiple sharp-force injuries on the victim’s neck and body.

The discovery was made after neighboring business owners grew suspicious when the shop remained closed well past its usual 9:00 a.m. opening time. The victim’s brother, Kamal Uddin, accompanied by locals, broke the external padlock on the shop’s shutter and found Azad’s bloodied remains on the floor. They immediately alerted the national emergency service via 999.

Golam Rabbani, officer-in-charge of the Gazipur Metropolitan Gacha Police Station, stated that the victim’s body was found covered with a quilt. A safe located near the body was found open, and investigators believe a significant quantity of gold jewelry was stolen.

Preliminary findings suggest the perpetrators may have been known to the victim, as the assailants were granted entry into the shop without alerting nearby merchants. Police noted that dummy jewelry displayed in the shop’s showcases remained untouched, further fueling the theory that the attackers had specific knowledge of the business and the victim.

Following the discovery, officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and senior administrative officers arrived at the scene to collect forensic evidence and review CCTV footage. The body has been transferred to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the robbery and homicide, though they have yet to confirm the total value of the stolen goods.
