Court Postpones Charge Framing Hearing for Former Law Minister Anisul Huq in Firearms Case

A Dhaka court on Sunday rescheduled the hearing on framing charges against former Law Minister Anisul Huq in an arms case filed at Banani Police Station. Judge Moinuddin Chowdhury of the Dhaka Special Tribunal-4 set September 24 as the new date for the proceedings following a petition submitted by the defense.
Defense lawyer Suman Hossain confirmed the court’s decision, stating that the defense requested more time to obtain duplicate documentation for a licensed pistol previously held by the former minister. Hossain explained that the original paperwork for the weapon was lost during the mass movement in July 2024, and the process of securing replacements is currently underway.
According to the case records, Anisul Huq held a licensed pistol under his name. The Ministry of Home Affairs had previously suspended all firearm licenses issued for personal protection between January 6, 2009, and August 5, 2024, and mandated that all such weapons be surrendered by September 3, 2024. Investigators allege that Huq failed to deposit the firearm at the local police station or notify authorities within the stipulated deadline, which extended to May 5, 2025.
The charges further state that law enforcement officials visited the residence of the accused but were unable to locate him or obtain information regarding the whereabouts of the weapon. Additionally, investigators reported finding no records of ammunition purchases. The case was initiated by Sub-Inspector Jane Alam Dulal of Banani Police Station.
Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Yadul Haque submitted the formal charge sheet to the court on August 29, 2025. Anisul Huq has been in custody since his arrest in the Sadarghat area of the capital on August 13, 2024.
