Police Arrest Suspect in Mongla Rape Case Amid Family Allegations of Witness Intimidation

Police in Mongla, Bagerhat, have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the rape of a teenage girl, even as her family reports ongoing intimidation to drop the legal case. The suspect, identified as Suman Sikdar, a resident of the Mongla municipal area, was apprehended last Friday and remanded to Bagerhat District Jail by a local court on Saturday.
The incident occurred last Sunday when the victim was gathering water lilies at a local fish enclosure. According to the girl’s uncle, Sikdar allegedly lured the teenager under the pretext of giving her fish before raping her. The girl initially remained silent due to threats against her life, but the family eventually discovered the assault after she fell ill and sought medical attention.
On Saturday, the victim underwent a mandatory medical examination at the Bagerhat District Hospital and later provided a formal statement to a magistrate. While the legal process is underway, the girl’s uncle alleged that the suspect’s relatives are pressuring the family to settle the matter out of court and have issued threats of further retaliation if the case is not withdrawn.
Reached by phone regarding the allegations of intimidation, Al-Amin, a relative of the suspect, stated he had no knowledge of such activities. No other members of Sikdar’s family were available for comment.
Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Atiqur Rahman confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody following the formal complaint filed by the victim’s uncle. Responding to reports of threats against the victim’s family, the police stated they have not yet received a formal complaint regarding intimidation but emphasized that they are prepared to take legal action should any such harassment be verified.
