Man detained by locals and police for attempted transformer theft in Matlab Uttar

Police in Matlab Uttar Upazila, Chandpur, have arrested a 25-year-old man accused of attempting to steal a transformer from an electricity pole belonging to the Palli Bidyut Samity. Local residents apprehended the suspect, identified as Mohammad Yusuf, before handing him over to law enforcement.

The incident occurred between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Friday in the Rarhikandi area. According to local residents and officials, Yusuf, a resident of Begumpur, was accompanied by two accomplices, identified as Mohammad Shamim and Mohammad Afzal, both of whom managed to flee the scene before police arrived.

Witnesses reported that the three men scaled the electricity pole early Friday morning and began dismantling the transformer. Upon being spotted by locals, the suspects attempted to escape. While the crowd successfully detained Yusuf and tied him to a tree, his two associates escaped capture. Police arrived shortly thereafter to take Yusuf into custody.

Rakib Hossain, an engineer with the Matlab Uttar Palli Bidyut Samity, stated that 23 transformers have been stolen from various parts of the upazila over the past month and a half. The estimated market value of the stolen equipment is approximately 2 million taka. Each incident has been documented with individual police complaints, and Yusuf has been named as a suspect in one of these prior cases.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Matlab Uttar Police Station, Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, confirmed that the suspect has been formally charged. Authorities are currently processing Yusuf to be presented before the court.
