New Monsoon Depression Triggers Heavy Rainfall Alert Across Four Divisions in Bangladesh

Bangladesh faces a renewed threat from extreme weather as a new monsoon depression has formed over the country’s southwestern coast, prompting the meteorological department to issue heavy rainfall warnings for four administrative divisions. This weather system follows closely on the heels of a previous depression that recently dissipated over the Indian state of Jharkhand after causing significant rainfall across coastal Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) confirmed that the well-marked low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal has intensified into a monsoon depression. Currently situated over the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh and the adjacent West Bengal coast, the system is expected to trigger gusty winds across maritime ports and the northern Bay of Bengal.
In response, authorities have maintained a Number 3 local cautionary signal for the seaports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra. Fishing vessels and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and exercise caution until further notice.
Meteorologists have issued a heavy rainfall alert effective for the next 48 hours starting from 8:00 a.m. local time on Monday. The divisions of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet are forecast to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, defined by the department as precipitation exceeding 44 millimeters, with some areas potentially receiving more than 88 millimeters.
The weather office warned that such intense downpours could lead to localized waterlogging in low-lying areas. Furthermore, officials issued a specific advisory regarding the risk of landslides in the hilly regions of the Chattogram division due to the projected accumulation of water.
While the primary impact is concentrated in the southern and eastern regions, sporadic rainfall is expected to persist across the remainder of the country, including the capital, Dhaka. Skies in the capital remained overcast throughout Monday morning, experiencing intermittent showers and fluctuating cloud cover as the influence of the depression continues to move across the region.
