Bangladesh Urges India to Extradite Sheikh Hasina and Fugitives to Foster Favorable Climate for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Visit

The Bangladeshi government has formally requested that India expedite the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives under the existing bilateral extradition treaty to foster a favorable environment for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s anticipated visit to New Delhi.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson AK AM Shahidul Karim addressed the media on Sunday, emphasizing that Dhaka is awaiting a formal response from Indian authorities. Beyond the extradition of the former Prime Minister, the government has specifically demanded the handover of suspects involved in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi.

Spokesperson Karim noted that while both nations have been coordinating for weeks regarding Prime Minister Rahman’s potential trip, recent developments have complicated the diplomatic climate. Specifically, he cited the public press conference held by Sheikh Hasina in Delhi following her departure on August 5, stating that such actions have undermined the conducive atmosphere necessary for the visit. Hasina had previously been convicted of crimes against humanity by the International Crimes Tribunal.

Despite these tensions, the Foreign Ministry affirmed that Bangladesh remains committed to its “Bangladesh First” policy, aiming to cultivate friendly bilateral relations with neighbors and the international community based on mutual interests.

Discussions regarding Prime Minister Rahman’s state visit to India, initiated by an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remain ongoing. While India initially proposed a two-day itinerary during the third week of August, Bangladesh is currently evaluating alternative dates. Officials from both countries are actively reviewing schedules for the third and fourth weeks of August to finalize the visit. As of Saturday, neither government had issued an official statement confirming the finalized dates.
