Jahangirnagar University students assault and shear outsider after accusing him of intoxication

A group of students at Jahangirnagar University’s Nawab Salimullah Hall assaulted an external college student and forcibly cut his hair on Saturday after accusing him of being intoxicated. The victim, a higher secondary student at Mirpur Government Bangla College, was subsequently handed over to the university’s security office.
The incident occurred at the hall’s guest room during the afternoon. According to witnesses, the student, who resides in the nearby Kathgara area, was intercepted by residents of Nawab Salimullah Hall while he was leaving the campus. The students claimed his behavior appeared incoherent and suspected he was under the influence of narcotics.
The victim stated that he had spent the previous night in the room of a student named Obaidur Rahman, also known as Rushad, who is enrolled in the Fine Arts department at the adjacent Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall. The victim recounted that while he was departing the campus on Saturday morning, several students confronted him, accused him of previously soliciting a lighter to use drugs, and forcibly took him to the Nawab Salimullah Hall guest room, where the assault took place.
Ibn Shihab, Vice President of the Nawab Salimullah Hall students’ union, alleged that the student’s speech was slurred and that he appeared intoxicated when he was detained. Shihab claimed that while he was in the process of contacting security personnel, one of the students proceeded to cut the victim’s hair. The identities of those involved in the physical assault have not yet been disclosed.
Obaidur Rahman confirmed that the victim had stayed in his room overnight on Friday but maintained that he had sent the student home the following morning.
University Proctor Professor Zakir Hossain stated that security officials and an assistant proctor were dispatched to the scene following reports that an outsider had been detained. Officials noted that the student had no prior criminal record. The university plans to release the student to his guardians after obtaining a written undertaking.
Addressing the nature of the disciplinary action taken by the students, Professor Hossain condemned the act of shaving the victim’s head as an issue of morality and behavioral standards. He described the incident as completely unexpected and stated that he intends to summon the involved hall students to address their conduct and emphasize the importance of appropriate campus values.
