Jamaat-e-Islami MP Amir Hamza vehicle vandalized during clashes in Kushtia

KUSHTIA — Supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament for Kushtia-3, Amir Hamza, and members of Gano Odhikar Parishad clashed in Kushtia town on Saturday evening, resulting in the vandalism of the lawmaker’s vehicle.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. near the Thanapara Jame Mosque at the Choy Rasta intersection. According to local witnesses and police, the confrontation erupted after Gano Odhikar Parishad held a protest rally to denounce recent remarks made by Amir Hamza regarding their organization.
As the MP was passing through the intersection in his vehicle, escorted by police, members of Gano Odhikar Parishad began chanting slogans. Witnesses reported that a scuffle broke out between the political factions, leading to a five-minute skirmish during which both sides threw stones. The projectiles shattered the rear window and caused damage to the exterior of Hamza’s vehicle.
Khandaker AKM Ali Mohsin, the Kushtia district emir of Jamaat-e-Islami, accused Gano Odhikar Parishad activists and members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, of orchestrating the attack. He confirmed that the MP was unhurt and had returned to his residence under security provided by party supporters. Mohsin stated that the party intends to file a formal case regarding the incident.
Tanvir Hossain, a media liaison for Hamza, alleged that the attack was a premeditated attempt on the MP’s life, noting that the incident occurred despite the presence of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel. He claimed to have sustained injuries during the fracas.
Conversely, Hasan Al Mamun, acting general secretary of the Gano Odhikar Parishad central committee, claimed on social media that Jamaat-e-Islami activists attacked their peaceful demonstrators. He stated that 40 to 50 of their members were seriously injured in the violence.
Following the initial clash, tensions escalated as supporters of Amir Hamza were seen patrolling the area with sticks. Reports indicate that these groups later targeted the Gano Odhikar Parishad district office at the High School Market and vandalized the private office of the organization’s district general secretary, Abdul Khalek, located under the Haripur connecting bridge.
Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain Matubbar confirmed that law enforcement was present during the incident and managed to bring the situation under control. Kushtia General Hospital officials reported that three individuals received primary medical treatment for minor injuries, likely sustained from stones.
Zakir Hossain Sarkar, member secretary of the Kushtia district BNP, denied allegations of his party’s involvement in the attack, characterizing the accusations as baseless. He maintained that members of the Chhatra Dal had intervened only to disperse the clashing groups and prevent further violence.
