Police recover body of teenage domestic worker in Dhaka Elephant Road apartment

Police recovered the hanging body of a 17-year-old domestic worker from an apartment on Elephant Road in the capital on Saturday morning. Authorities identified the deceased as Ratna Akter, a native of Sylhet and the daughter of Md. Dulal Mia.
Police arrived at the ninth-floor residence at approximately 6:00 a.m. after receiving a distress call via the 999 emergency hotline. According to the New Market Police Station, the apartment is occupied by an elderly woman who employed two domestic workers. Ratna had been working at the residence for approximately two and a half months.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Ratna and the other domestic worker slept in the same room on Friday night. Upon waking on Saturday morning, the second worker discovered Ratna hanging from a ceiling fan in a separate room. The homeowner subsequently contacted emergency services.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of New Market Police Station, Mohammad Ayub, stated that the victim was found with a scarf tied around her neck. While police transported her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, medical staff declared her dead upon arrival.
Law enforcement officials currently suspect the death to be a suicide. However, the exact cause of death remains under investigation and will be confirmed pending the results of a post-mortem examination.
