Mechanical Failure Halts Production at Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant Unit One

Power generation at the number one unit of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in the Parbatipur Upazila of Dinajpur has been suspended due to a mechanical failure in a pump. The shutdown, which occurred Friday morning, has temporarily halted the unit’s contribution to the national grid.
Chief Engineer Abu Bakr Siddique confirmed the incident, stating that maintenance crews are currently working to repair the faulty equipment. Authorities expect the unit to be operational again by Saturday, at which point electricity generation will resume and resume feeding into the national power supply.
Prior to the suspension, the number one unit was generating between 50 and 55 megawatts of electricity. Despite this disruption, the power plant continues to function through its number three unit, which is currently supplying 170 to 180 megawatts to the national grid. The facility’s number two unit has remained out of service since 2020.
This is the second time the number one unit has experienced a mechanical failure in recent weeks. The unit previously suspended operations on July 31 for similar technical reasons, resuming activity on August 2 after a two-day repair period.
