BNP leader accused of raping schoolgirl in Kuliarchar amid alleged cover-up attempt

Police in Kishoreganj’s Kuliarchar upazila have launched an investigation into the alleged rape of an 11-year-old fifth-grade student, following a formal complaint filed by the victim’s father on Friday night. The accused has been identified as Joj Mia, 55, who serves as the general secretary of a local ward unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to the victim’s family and local accounts, the incident occurred on Thursday morning while the girl was gathering firewood in a field near her home. The suspect allegedly gagged the child, dragged her into a nearby wooded area, and sexually assaulted her. The victim was rescued after local residents heard her cries for help.
The girl’s father alleged that several influential village figures attempted to obstruct justice by proposing a settlement through a local arbitration council. He claimed that these individuals offered a payment of 50,000 taka to dissuade him from pursuing legal action and subsequently helped the suspect flee the scene.
The father further stated that Joj Mia has a history of similar misconduct in the area. Despite facing intense social pressure and threats from associates of the accused to drop the case, the family proceeded with filing the complaint. He reported that they continue to receive threats following their decision to notify the authorities.
Kuliarchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Arif Uddin confirmed that a formal complaint has been registered. He stated that the incident is under active investigation and that arrangements are being made for a medical examination of the victim. Further legal action will be determined based on the findings of the examination.
