Court orders jail for robbery suspect posing as police officer in Dhaka

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the detention of 40-year-old Mohammad Russel following the conclusion of his seven-day remand in connection with a robbery involving impersonation of law enforcement officers. Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid issued the order after a hearing at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin of the prosecution division confirmed the development. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Debkumar Acharya of the Detective Branch (DB) Lalbagh division, had requested that the accused remain in custody until the investigation is finalized. In the petition, investigators noted that Russel has provided significant information that is currently being verified. Authorities further argued that the accused’s identity and residential details remain under scrutiny, and his release could hinder the investigation or lead to him absconding.

The case stems from an incident on the evening of July 25, when businessmen Mohammad Riaz and his partner, Ajmir Hossain, were traveling from Uttara toward Sherpur with 2.55 million taka intended for an Akij Group dealership. Near a bridge in Sector 5 of Uttara, a group of five to six individuals identifying themselves as DB officers intercepted the businessmen. The perpetrators reportedly entered the victims’ vehicle, blindfolded and assaulted them, and transported them to a secluded location in Sector 3. The suspects then seized the cash, the private car, and the victims’ mobile phones before abandoning the pair near the 300-foot road at approximately 1:00 a.m.

Mohammad Riaz filed a formal complaint at the Uttara West Police Station on August 3. Following an investigation, police arrested Russel in the Uttara area on Tuesday night.

Investigating officer Debkumar Acharya stated that the suspect has a history of posing as a member of law enforcement to commit robberies across various regions. According to police records, Russel is also facing multiple charges involving arms and explosives in the Trishal and Haluaghat police stations of Mymensingh, as well as the Sakhipur police station in Tangail. Officials confirmed that the suspect provided critical information during his interrogation.
