Sunamganj man arrested for murdering two children following family dispute

SUNAMGANJ, Bangladesh – Authorities in Sunamganj have arrested a 30-year-old man after he confessed to murdering his two children by throwing them into a wetland, following a domestic dispute. The suspect, Kamrul Islam, a resident of Perua Madhupur village in the Charnerchar Union of Dirai Upazila, reportedly orchestrated a disappearance ruse before the bodies were discovered.

The victims have been identified as seven-year-old Muhaddis and four-year-old Tulna. Their bodies were recovered from different locations within the Dekhar Haor wetland. Tulna’s body was found on Tuesday afternoon near Barkapon in Shantiganj Upazila, while the body of Muhaddis was discovered by locals near Gobindapur in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila on Wednesday.

According to police, the killings stemmed from persistent friction between Kamrul’s wife, Afroza Begum, and his mother, Fuljan Bibi, over the children’s behavior. Investigations revealed that on Friday, an argument erupted between the two women following an incident where the children were disciplined. Upon returning from Jumu’ah prayers, Kamrul became enraged after his mother accused his wife of assault and his wife reportedly responded with verbal abuse.

Kamrul confessed to police that he left the house that afternoon with his children without informing his family. He traveled to Sylhet before returning to Sunamganj on Sunday. During the commute, he administered sleeping medication to the children. According to his statement, he first threw the unconscious four-year-old into the water at Barkapon, before discarding the seven-year-old into the wetland near Gobindapur.

Upon returning home, Kamrul claimed the children were missing and filed a general diary with the local police. He also encouraged social media campaigns to locate them, attempting to conceal his involvement until discrepancies in his story prompted police to detain him for questioning on Wednesday.

Ratan Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that the bodies are currently being held for post-mortem examinations before being released to the family. Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Dirai Police Station, stated that Kamrul has admitted to the murders, citing family discord as his motive. Formal charges are currently being processed.
