Government to Bear Full Treatment Costs for Conjoined Twins at Dhaka Medical College Hospital

Health Adviser Sardar Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Bakul announced on Monday that the government will bear all medical expenses for conjoined twins Zainab and Umm-e-Kulsum, who were recently admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The infants, born to shop assistant Nahid Hasan and his wife Sanjida Akter from Bilgathua village in Kushtia’s Daulatpur Upazila, were admitted to the pediatric department of the hospital at approximately 8:00 p.m.
The Health Adviser visited the hospital shortly after the admission to oversee the infants’ care. He explained that the parents had previously returned to their village due to financial constraints that made the twins’ treatment unattainable. Following media reports on the family’s situation, the Adviser acted under the directives of the Prime Minister to coordinate the infants’ transport to Dhaka for specialized medical intervention.
To ensure comprehensive care, hospital authorities are forming a medical board comprised of internal specialists, with the option to consult external experts if necessary. Beyond covering all medical costs, the authorities have arranged for the parents’ daily meals and provided them with an initial stipend of 5,000 taka for incidental expenses.
Zainab and Umm-e-Kulsum were born three months and seven days ago at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. The couple has one older son.
