Chittagong Education Board Reports Decline in SSC Pass Rate to 59.48 Percent

The Chittagong Education Board recorded a pass rate of 59.48 percent in this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, reflecting a significant decline in academic performance compared to the previous year. Official data released on Monday shows that 9,698 students achieved a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0, a drop from the 11,843 students who secured the top grade last year. The pass rate in the previous cycle stood at 72.7 percent.

Controller of Examinations Parvez Sajjad Chowdhury announced the results at the board’s auditorium on Monday morning. The examinations covered students from Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari districts. Out of 130,219 students who appeared for the exams, 77,453 successfully passed. Female students outperformed their male counterparts, recording a pass rate of 60.03 percent compared to 58.76 percent for male students.

A breakdown of the results shows a widespread decrease in performance across all regions under the board’s jurisdiction. The pass rate within Chittagong Metropolitan area fell to 74 percent from 81.03 percent last year, while the pass rate for the rest of Chittagong district dropped to 57.13 percent from 71.29 percent.

Performance in the remaining four districts also saw marked declines: Cox’s Bazar fell to 57.3 percent, Rangamati to 41.17 percent, Khagrachhari to 34.99 percent, and Bandarban to 47.88 percent. By department, science students led with an 84.41 percent pass rate, followed by business studies at 60.12 percent, and humanities at 38.79 percent.

Institutional performance has also deteriorated, with only 21 schools achieving a 100 percent pass rate, down from 33 schools last year. Conversely, eight schools reported that none of their students passed the examination, a sharp increase from the single school that recorded such a result in the previous year.

The written examinations for the SSC and equivalent tests commenced on April 21 and concluded on May 20. While standard protocol dictates that results be published within 60 days of the final exam—which would have been July 20—the results were officially announced today, August 10, following a delay of approximately three weeks.
