Jagannath University bans all protests and gatherings amid risk of campus clashes

Jagannath University authorities have imposed an indefinite ban on all rallies, processions, and public gatherings within the campus following a scheduling conflict that threatened to destabilize the academic environment. The decision, formalized in a notification signed by Proctor Mohammad Nasir Uddin late Wednesday, was issued as a preemptive measure to maintain order after three separate groups announced competing programs for Thursday at the same location and time.
The tension arose after the Jagannath University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal scheduled a protest march and human chain for 12:30 p.m. in front of the Bhasha Shahid Rafiq Building. The student wing intended to demonstrate against the alleged violent activities of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, the infiltration of outside agitators into the campus, and recent incidents of mob violence directed at students and party activists.
Concurrently, a group operating under the banner of “Oikyoboddho Jagannath” (United Jagannath) had organized a protest march at the same site to condemn alleged attacks on university students by individuals associated with Shaheed Suhrawardy College. Adding to the potential for unrest, the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JOCSU) had previously scheduled a ceremony for the handover of an ambulance at the same building for 12:00 p.m.
Citing the high probability of confrontation between these groups, university officials opted for a total prohibition of campus demonstrations. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, and security protocols have been heightened to ensure the directive is enforced across all university premises.
