Landslide at Cox’s Bazar Refugee Camp Kills Child Amid Heavy Rains

A seven-year-old Rohingya boy was killed in a landslide at the Tajnimarkhola refugee camp in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar, on Wednesday afternoon as relentless monsoon rains triggered multiple collapses across the region. The victim, Nanu Zia, was inside his family’s shelter in Block F-5 when a segment of the hillside gave way during heavy rainfall at approximately 2:15 p.m., burying the structure under debris.
According to Mohammad Riaz Uddin Ahmed, acting commander of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn), local volunteers managed to pull the child from the wreckage and rush him to the MSF hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The collapse also damaged two other residences within the same camp, belonging to Saber Ahmad and Halima Khatun.
The incident comes amid a week of severe weather in Cox’s Bazar. Data from the local meteorological office indicate that 121 millimeters of rain fell in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday noon. This sustained deluge has rendered the mountainous terrain highly unstable, resulting in localized landslides across various areas, including the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive, Himchhari, and Ramu.
APBn officials have issued urgent warnings to refugees residing in high-risk zones, urging them to evacuate to safer areas as the threat of further slides persists. Authorities are currently coordinating with camp administration to facilitate the burial of the young victim.
The tragedy marks a grim continuation of a deadly season for the refugee camps. According to police records, at least 19 Rohingya refugees, including six children, have lost their lives in a series of landslides throughout the region since the beginning of July.
