Student killed while intervening in football match dispute in Bogra

A 16-year-old student was killed Monday evening in Bogra’s Sherpur upazila after he attempted to mediate a dispute that erupted during a local football match. The victim, Jamil Sheikh, a tenth-grade student at the RDA Laboratory School and College, was pronounced dead shortly after he was attacked at the Sherua Adarsha High School playground.
According to local residents and witnesses, the incident began during an afternoon football match when a heated argument broke out between several youths. Jamil, who was watching the game from the sidelines, intervened in an attempt to calm the situation. As he stepped in to de-escalate the tension, he was allegedly confronted by 22-year-old Shakil, a resident of the same village. Witnesses reported that Shakil struck Jamil with multiple kicks and punches, causing the teenager to collapse on the field.
Despite efforts by bystanders to rush him to a nearby hospital, Jamil was declared dead by medical staff. Shakil fled the scene immediately following the altercation and remains at large.
Police recovered the body around 7:30 p.m. Monday. According to Sub-Inspector Jahidul Islam of Sherpur Police Station, the victim’s body displayed multiple trauma marks, including injuries to the abdomen. The body has been transferred to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have confirmed they are investigating the case as a homicide stemming from the sports-related dispute. Inspector Zainul Abedin stated that law enforcement has visited the scene and is currently conducting an operation to apprehend the suspect. The victim’s family is in the process of filing a formal murder case.
