Bangladesh and China Affirm Commitment to Elevate Bilateral Ties and Economic Cooperation

The diplomatic and economic partnership between Bangladesh and China is entering a new phase of strategic cooperation, aimed at elevating bilateral ties to unprecedented levels over the coming decades. Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir underscored this momentum on Monday, noting that both nations are working intensively to capitalize on emerging opportunities in trade, investment, and supply chain integration.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the “Comparative Governance Forum 2026” in Dhaka, co-hosted by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) and China’s Fudan University, Kabir highlighted the potential for China’s advanced technology to drive industrialization, job creation, and export diversification within Bangladesh. He specifically pointed to the recent visit of the Prime Minister to Beijing as a historic milestone that has laid the groundwork for a deepened relationship for the next half-century.
Echoing these sentiments, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen described the Prime Minister’s recent visit as a catalyst for mutual understanding. Ambassador Yao emphasized that both countries have reached a consensus to align their developmental strategies, particularly within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He reaffirmed China’s active interest in advancing major infrastructure projects, including the long-discussed Teesta River management initiative.
The discussions also touched upon broader regional cooperation, with officials confirming an agreement to harmonize strategies concerning industrial growth and connectivity. Key areas of focus include the proposed China-Bangladesh-Myanmar Economic Corridor and collaborative efforts in river basin management and administrative governance.
The opening session, chaired by BIISS Director General Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman, also featured remarks from Fudan University Vice President Chen Zhimin. As the forum continues, the focus remains on leveraging these multifaceted engagements to secure long-term economic stability and technological advancement for both nations.
