Bangladesh Interior Minister rules out threat from Awami League ahead of July uprising anniversary

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday declared that the Awami League lacks the capacity to organize any significant unrest surrounding the two-year anniversary of the July mass uprising, dismissing the party as a “mafia force” currently barred from political activity. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, the minister stated that while the group may occasionally attempt to exert influence from abroad, they no longer possess the strength to destabilize the nation or incite sabotage.

In anticipation of the upcoming anniversary of the August 5 government transition, the Home Minister announced that a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister is scheduled for Tuesday. The session is expected to include representatives from various political parties to ensure national stability and maintain law and order across the country.

Regarding the legal status of former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed, the minister confirmed that the government has instructed its retained law firm in the United Arab Emirates to seek the immediate revocation of the former official’s conditional bail. While the minister did not disclose the specific legal reasoning behind the bail, he confirmed that authorities are aware of reports indicating Benazir holds a passport issued by another nation.

Addressing recent security concerns following the discovery of a suspicious object at a metro rail station, the minister urged the public to remain calm. He noted that the incident appeared to be a deliberate attempt by unidentified groups to undermine communal harmony, adding that an investigation is currently underway to identify those responsible.

The Home Minister emphasized that extremist activity has significantly declined compared to previous years, with law enforcement agencies remaining on high alert to prevent the resurgence of radical elements. Commenting on international relations, the minister described the recent visit of Sergio Gor, a special envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, as a significant development. He noted that during the visit, the envoy expressed that the United States would extend full cooperation to the government, including support regarding BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
