Adenovirus Coinfection Complicates Measles Outbreak Among Children in Bangladesh

A surge in measles cases across Bangladesh has revealed a concerning clinical trend: the co-infection of measles with adenovirus, which is causing rapid and severe health deterioration in young patients. Physicians at the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute have identified the presence of adenovirus in a significant number of children hospitalized for measles, particularly those who have failed to respond to standard treatments.
Doctors at the facility began utilizing respiratory panel testing to determine why certain patients were not recovering. Testing revealed that nearly half of the 35 cases examined—16 children—tested positive for both measles and adenovirus. While adenovirus is generally a common, manageable virus responsible for mild respiratory symptoms, its interaction with measles is causing clinical complications, including “white lung” syndrome, a condition where the lungs lose their oxygen-processing capacity.
Despite the clinical severity, the Ministry of Health and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) have faced criticism for appearing to overlook the finding. Hospital officials presented the data regarding the co-infection during a high-level meeting on June 23, which was attended by health ministry officials, medical experts, and representatives from international organizations. However, the Director of the DGHS’s Disease Control wing stated he was unaware of the report or the meeting’s findings, drawing sharp rebukes from public health experts who argue that failing to address this data during an ongoing outbreak is a profound administrative oversight.
The findings have, however, attracted the attention of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Following reports within infectious disease research networks, experts from the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters, acting through the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, visited the Shishu Hospital to investigate. Plans for a formal technical mission are reportedly underway, as the CDC seeks to evaluate what assistance is required to manage the mounting crisis.
The emergence of these complications comes amid a broader failure to contain the country’s measles outbreak. Earlier this year, the government launched an extensive national vaccination campaign targeting children aged six months to five years. The campaign was marred by significant data inaccuracies; while authorities initially estimated a target population of 18 million children, follow-up health drives revealed an actual population of approximately 22.6 million, leaving millions of children potentially unreached.
As of the latest reports, the situation remains critical. Daily hospital admissions for measles-like symptoms continue to exceed 1,000, with the annual death toll reaching 844. Despite hopes that the vaccination drive would stabilize the situation, the persistence of the outbreak and the newly identified viral co-infections have prompted urgent calls for a more transparent and evidence-based response from national health authorities.
