Bangladesh Police issue nationwide alert over potential vehicle attacks

Police headquarters has issued a nationwide alert directing all field units to bolster security measures following intelligence reports suggesting that police vehicles could be targeted for attacks. The directive, transmitted through the police operations control room on Saturday, explicitly warns that patrol jeeps, pickup trucks, and buses are at risk of being targeted by hostile actors.

Officers have been instructed to exercise maximum caution while on duty, specifically mandating that vehicles be parked in secure locations whenever they are required to stop. Furthermore, the order extends to the protection of government vehicles when they are off-duty at police stations, barracks, or office compounds. Authorities have been ordered to increase regular patrols, enhance surveillance, and remain hyper-vigilant for suspicious individuals or objects within these areas. Any potential threats must be reported to senior officials immediately.

The heightened security measures follow a series of recent incidents that have caused public concern. On July 24, law enforcement recovered a bomb concealed within an umbrella near the Motijheel metro rail station. The following day, a separate security scare occurred near the Bangladesh Bank headquarters when a discarded sack prompted fears of another explosive device.

Tensions remained high on Saturday when reports of suspicious bags and packages at the Mirpur-10 and Farmgate metro stations triggered emergency responses. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s bomb disposal unit was deployed to both sites; however, subsequent inspections confirmed that the items posed no threat and contained no explosives.

Police headquarters spokesperson and Assistant Inspector General A.H.M. Shahadat Hossain stated that the directive is part of routine efforts to maintain public safety and ensure the force remains vigilant.
