Dhaka University hall official suspended following controversy over guests conduct

University authorities have suspended the residential status of Ibrahim Khalil, the assistant general secretary (AGS) of Dhaka University’s Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, following allegations of homosexual activity involving two guests in his dormitory room. The move comes after a video surfaced on social media depicting the individuals purportedly confessing to the act, which allegedly occurred on July 27.
The incident gained public attention after Onoy Chowdhury, a resident student and roommate of Khalil, shared a post on Facebook claiming that he discovered two visitors in an intimate situation within the room. While acknowledging that sensitive evidence exists, Chowdhury stated that the identities of those involved are being withheld to ensure the safety of witnesses.
In a public statement, Khalil expressed regret over the incident, asserting that he had no prior knowledge of or involvement in the guests’ actions. He explained that he had permitted the individuals to stay in his room under the impression that they were seeking medical treatment and noted that he was not present when the incident took place. Furthermore, Khalil provided a phone recording to the press in which one of the individuals involved claimed that, while they were tempted to engage in illicit activities, they were interrupted by the roommate before the act was fully realized.
The controversy has drawn scrutiny toward Khalil’s political associations, as he was elected as the AGS of the hall parliament with the backing of the Islami Chhatra Shibir. Muha. Mohiuddin Khan, the president of the Dhaka University branch of the organization, confirmed that Khalil is an activist affiliated with the student group.
Provost Professor Md. Aminul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed that the administration has officially canceled Khalil’s seat in the hall temporarily, pending a formal investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Toukir Hasan, the general secretary of the Shahidullah Hall parliament, indicated that the student leadership is currently gathering testimony from both Khalil and his roommate to determine the appropriate disciplinary measures.
The revelations triggered unrest on campus, with a group of students staging a protest march near the hall’s pond on Saturday night to express their indignation regarding the incident.
