Grandson confesses to murder of elderly woman in Dhaka after CCTV captures crime

A 71-year-old woman was strangled to death in her apartment in Dhaka’s Dakshinkhan area, a crime captured in its entirety by a CCTV security system installed by her son. Police have since arrested the victim’s grand-nephew, Abu Talha, who provided a formal confession to a Dhaka court on Saturday.
The victim, Mahbub Ara Begum, had been living alone on the second floor of her four-story residence since the death of her husband nine months ago. Concerned for her safety, her son, Mohammad Mahbub Hassan, had installed multiple cameras throughout the apartment, including in the bedroom, while he resided elsewhere with his own family.
The grim discovery occurred late Thursday night when Hassan, unable to reach his mother throughout the day, checked the live feed from his mobile phone around 3:00 a.m. The footage revealed that earlier that evening, at approximately 5:41 p.m., Talha entered the apartment accompanied by several unidentified individuals. The video showed Talha attacking Begum, initially attempting to smother her with a pillow and fabric before pulling her to the floor. Ultimately, the assailant used a scarf to strangle the woman to death.
Following the murder, the suspect allegedly removed the victim’s gold earrings before locking the apartment door from the inside and fleeing the scene. Following the discovery of the footage, Hassan filed a formal murder case with the Dakshinkhan Police Station on Friday. Law enforcement subsequently launched an operation in the South Gawair area, where they successfully apprehended Talha.
On Saturday, the suspect was brought before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat. Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Abdullah-Al-Mamun presented the accused, who provided a voluntary statement admitting to the killing. Following the proceedings, the court ordered Talha to be remanded to prison.
Reflecting on the incident, Hassan credited the surveillance technology for the rapid identification of the perpetrator. He has publicly called for the maximum legal penalty for those involved in his mother’s death. Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing as they work to identify the other individuals seen in the security footage.
