Indian National Detained at Chattogram Airport with 427 Grams of Gold

Customs officials and intelligence agencies intercepted 427 grams of gold at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Saturday, arresting an Indian national attempting to smuggle the contraband into the country. The gold, valued at approximately 8.16 million taka, was discovered following a joint operation by Airport Customs Intelligence, the National Security Intelligence (NSI) agency, and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
The suspect, identified as Tamim Ansari from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, arrived at the airport at 8:30 a.m. aboard an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah. Acting on a tip-off, officials intercepted Ansari at the customs hall’s “green channel.” Upon conducting a physical search, authorities discovered nine pieces of gold hidden inside the passenger’s undergarments in a specialized paste form.
During preliminary questioning, Ansari disclosed that he is a textile merchant who frequently travels along this route. Airport public relations officer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil confirmed that the seized gold has been handed over to customs authorities for legal processing.
Officials are currently preparing a formal case against the suspect, who will be transferred to the Patenga Police Station upon completion of the initial legal procedures. Airport authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining stringent surveillance protocols in collaboration with various intelligence branches to curb gold smuggling and foreign currency laundering.
