Bangladesh Appoints 265 New Deputy and Assistant Attorneys General After Removing Predecessors

The Bangladesh government has overhauled the state’s legal counsel, appointing 86 lawyers as Deputy Attorney Generals (DAG) and 179 as Assistant Attorney Generals (AAG). The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued separate notifications on Thursday formally canceling the appointments of all previous incumbents before announcing the new roster of 265 law officers.
These appointments mark the first such overhaul of the Attorney General’s office since the current administration took power. Under the authority granted by the Bangladesh Law Officers Order of 1972, the new appointees will serve until further notice, with the changes effective immediately.
The decision follows significant scrutiny regarding the size of the Attorney General’s office. A report published by *Prothom Alo* on March 12 had previously questioned the necessity of maintaining a record-high workforce of 103 DAGs and 230 AAGs, a staffing level that legal experts argued lacked administrative justification.
The shift began after President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed senior Supreme Court lawyer Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal as the nation’s 18th Attorney General on March 25. Shortly after assuming office, Kazal initiated a performance evaluation process for existing law officers to assess their professional competence, which prompted several DAGs and AAGs to resign.
Prior to Thursday’s mass appointment, the office was staffed by 93 Deputy Attorney Generals and 213 Assistant Attorney Generals, most of whom had been appointed during the previous interim government. While some individuals from the prior administration were reappointed to their positions, others were excluded from the new list following the review process.
