Authorities assume care for newborn found to mentally ill woman in Faridpur

A mentally challenged woman has given birth to a baby girl in Nagarkanda, Faridpur, sparking a local humanitarian effort to ensure the safety and well-being of the mother and child. The woman, who had been living on the streets of the Fulshuti Bazar area for approximately 18 months, went into labor on Monday evening and delivered the infant with the assistance of local residents.
Following the birth, community members transported both the mother and newborn to the Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex. According to Dr. Iftekhar Azad, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, both patients are in stable condition and are receiving round-the-clock care from hospital staff.

Local authorities, including Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rezwana Afrin, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Al Fahad, and Officer-in-Charge of Nagarkanda Police Station Rasul Samdani Azad, visited the hospital on Tuesday morning to assess the situation. UNO Afrin personally oversaw the welfare of the infant, confirming that two village police officers have been assigned to provide security for the pair.
The local administration has committed to overseeing the care of the mother and child indefinitely while efforts to establish their identities are underway. Should attempts to locate their families prove unsuccessful, officials confirmed they will coordinate with the district social services department to determine the next legal steps. Until then, the administration remains the primary guardian, ensuring that the newborn and her mother receive consistent medical attention and protection.
