Mother hands drug-addicted sons to police following domestic abuse in Brahmanbaria

A mother in the Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria handed her two sons over to police on Thursday, bringing an end to years of abuse fueled by their severe drug addiction. With the assistance of neighbors, the woman surrendered 30-year-old Abul Imon and 24-year-old Abul Azad to authorities after the pair threatened her life over a demand for money.
According to a report by the local news outlet Prothom Alo, the brothers had become increasingly violent in their pursuit of funds for drugs. The confrontation reached a breaking point when the siblings demanded 13,000 taka from their mother, a government employee. When she refused, the brothers began destroying household furniture and threatened to kill her.

The family’s struggle with the brothers’ addiction has spanned several years, leaving the mother physically ill and emotionally devastated. The abuse was so severe that the brothers’ father left the family home a year and a half ago to escape the hostile environment. Despite numerous attempts by their parents to steer them toward rehabilitation and a normal life, the brothers’ behavior escalated, leading to the decision to seek police intervention.
Following the intervention, Sarail Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Saiful Islam presided over a mobile court at the scene. The brothers confessed to their actions and were each sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment.

UNO Saiful Islam confirmed the sentencing, stating that the family had reached a state of total desperation due to the brothers’ persistent harassment. Following the court’s ruling, Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manjur Kader Bhuiyan confirmed that both men were transferred to the Brahmanbaria district jail to serve their sentences.
