Husband and wife die from electrocution while disconnecting electric rickshaw in Barguna

A husband and wife were killed by electrocution Monday morning while attempting to disconnect a battery-operated autorickshaw from a charging station at their home in Barguna. The incident occurred in the Dalbhanga area of Dholua Union, leaving the couple’s eldest daughter hospitalized with injuries.

The victims, identified as 45-year-old Md. Bellal and his 40-year-old wife, Kamala, were preparing to head to a local market to purchase materials for a cattle shed currently under construction on their property. Family members and neighbors reported that Bellal was electrocuted first while unplugging the charging cable. When his wife and daughter rushed to his aid, they were also struck by the current.

Neighbors quickly intervened, cutting the power supply to the house and rushing the three victims to the Barguna 250-bed General Hospital. Upon arrival, emergency medical staff declared both Bellal and Kamala dead. Their daughter, Arifa, sustained injuries to her legs but is currently receiving medical care.

Dr. Apurba Kumar Chowdhury, the emergency medical officer at the hospital, confirmed that the couple arrived without signs of life. Following the completion of mandatory medical assessments, the hospital verified that both had succumbed to fatal electrical shocks.

Local authorities have since dispatched police officers to the scene to conduct an investigation. Officer-in-Charge of Barguna Sadar Police Station, Abu Sahadat Md. Hasnain Parvez, stated that a case of unnatural death would be filed in connection with the tragedy. The couple, who were parents to three children, now leave behind two younger siblings in addition to their injured daughter.
