Case filed after schoolboy shot in Comilla drug turf war

A 12-year-old student remains hospitalized in Dhaka after being shot during a violent clash between rival drug trafficking factions in the Katabil area of Comilla. The incident, which occurred Thursday, has sparked local outrage and prompted a swift investigation by law enforcement, with police confirming the arrest of one individual connected to the shooting.
The victim, sixth-grader Ethan Ahmed, was struck by a bullet in the back while heading out for a school break. According to hospital officials at Comilla Medical College, the projectile caused significant trauma, including injury to his lungs. Due to the severity of his condition and a lack of available intensive care beds locally, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for urgent treatment.

The victim’s father, Yunus Mia, filed a formal case Thursday night at the Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station, naming six individuals as suspects and identifying an additional five to six unidentified perpetrators. Police officer-in-charge Touhidul Anwar confirmed the filing of the case, noting that the suspects are identified local narcotics dealers. While 22-year-old Shrabon was arrested at the scene, police stated he was not explicitly named in the initial FIR but remains in custody as a suspect.
Local tensions in the Katabil neighborhood had been escalating for days, fueled by a territorial dispute over drug distribution. Violence broke out Thursday afternoon following a local anti-drug protest, during which armed individuals reportedly attacked the participants. The ensuing gunfire and chaos left at least five people injured, including the young student.

In response to the shooting, Comilla-6 Member of Parliament Monirul Haque Chowdhury visited the victim’s family and held an emergency meeting with administrative officials at the Comilla Circuit House. Expressing deep frustration over the prevalence of narcotics in the region, the lawmaker demanded an immediate and rigorous crackdown on criminal syndicates. He emphasized that the situation had reached a critical threshold, asserting that the state must hold the perpetrators accountable to ensure the safety of the public and the local youth.
Police and Detective Branch teams are currently conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspects, who are believed to have fled the area. Authorities have vowed to maintain pressure on the criminal groups until those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
