Munshiganj man jailed following attempted assault of five-year-old girl

A five-year-old child narrowly escaped an attempted rape in the Bhoborchar union of Munshiganj’s Gazaria sub-district on Monday morning. Local residents intervened during the incident, detaining the suspect and turning him over to law enforcement after subjecting him to a physical thrashing.
The accused, identified as 33-year-old Manju, is a restaurant worker currently residing in the Bhoborchar area. Originally from Karimkhan village in the Imampur union, his family reportedly lives in Narayanganj.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when the child was standing near a tube well close to her home. Manju, who was passing by, allegedly approached the girl under the guise of wanting a drink of water before forcibly grabbing her. The child’s mother witnessed the act and raised an alarm, prompting nearby residents to rush to the scene. The crowd subsequently apprehended Manju and beat him before alerting the police.
Following his arrest, Manju denied the allegations. He claimed that he had been walking after finishing his shift at a local restaurant and merely attempted to ask the child her name when the crowd attacked him without provocation. He maintained that he had committed no wrongdoing.

Inspector (Investigation) Md. Sabbir Hossain of Gazaria Police Station confirmed that officers arrived quickly to take custody of the suspect from the mob. The man was transported to a hospital for medical treatment before being formally charged. Following a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Manju was arrested and subsequently remanded to jail custody by a local court on Monday afternoon.
