BGB Detains Two for Attempted Illegal Border Crossing in Netrokona

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) forces detained an alleged human trafficker and a 14-year-old girl while they were attempting to cross the border into India from the Farangpara Bottala area in Netrokona’s Durgapur upazila on Saturday.
The Netrokona Battalion (31 BGB) confirmed the arrests in a press release issued by Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Touhidul Bari. The suspects were identified as 25-year-old Silver Mankin, a resident of Bharatpur, and the unnamed teenager from Baroiganj. According to BGB officials, the pair was intercepted near border pillar 1156/8-S during a routine patrol. Preliminary questioning revealed that the minor intended to enter India illegally to reunite with relatives living across the border, utilizing Mankin as a facilitator. Both individuals were subsequently handed over to the Durgapur police station.
Khandaker Shaker Ahmed Khan, officer-in-charge of Durgapur police station, stated that the BGB is preparing a formal case against the suspects under the Human Trafficking Deterrence and Suppression Act. Following the filing of charges, the duo will be presented before a local court.
The incident comes amid heightened security measures along the Netrokona border, where the BGB has intensified patrols and increased manpower at border outposts to prevent illegal crossings and human trafficking. Battalion commander Lt. Col. Bari emphasized that the force is maintaining constant surveillance across identified vulnerable transit points.
Addressing recent media speculation regarding a failed push-in attempt of 137 individuals by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) last Thursday, Lt. Col. Bari categorically denied the reports. He clarified that recent activity in the area was part of a planned joint patrol involving BGB personnel and local villagers to maintain order, noting that there is no verified information to support claims of an attempted mass push-in.
