Body of college student recovered from Dakatia River after 18-hour search following attempted swim

The body of Abdullah Mohammad Shihab, an 18-year-old college student who went missing while attempting to swim across the Dakatia River in Nangalkot, Comilla, was recovered Saturday morning following an intensive 18-hour search operation. Divers located the teenager’s remains near the Jakjor-Narandia bridge, which connects the Nangalkot and Chauddagram sub-districts, at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Shihab, the only son of Jahirul Islam and Taslima Begum from Narandia village, was a first-year student at the Chittagong Navy School and College. He had returned to his ancestral home to celebrate the Eid holiday with his family.

According to local accounts and family members, the tragedy unfolded on Friday afternoon when Shihab and three friends attempted to swim across the river to collect palm fruit in the adjacent Chauddagram area. While the group managed the initial crossing, Shihab encountered difficulties during their return attempt before Friday prayers. Although his two companions successfully reached the riverbank, Shihab vanished beneath the water mid-stream.
Initial search efforts led by local residents were later joined by the Chauddagram Fire Service and a specialized diving unit from Chandpur. Despite exhaustive efforts throughout Friday afternoon, the search was suspended at nightfall due to poor visibility. Operations resumed at daybreak, resulting in the discovery of Shihab’s body trapped beneath a cluster of water hyacinths.

Nangalkot Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Arifur Rahman confirmed that the body was recovered through a coordinated effort between fire service personnel and divers. Following the completion of mandatory legal procedures, the remains were released to the grieving family for burial.
