Measles Outbreak Claims Eight More Children, Total Death Toll Reaches 583

Bangladesh is facing a critical surge in measles cases, with health officials reporting eight additional child deaths over the 24-hour period ending Saturday morning. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed that the latest fatalities occurred across multiple regions, with three deaths in Dhaka, two in Sylhet, two in Mymensingh, and one in Chittagong. During the same period, authorities documented 1,086 new cases of children exhibiting measles symptoms.
Since the outbreak was first tracked on March 15, the national death toll associated with measles-related symptoms has reached 583. This cumulative figure includes 493 children who died from suspected symptoms and another 90 whose cases were laboratory-confirmed as measles. The crisis has placed an immense burden on the healthcare system, with 69,612 children identified as symptomatic since mid-March.

Medical facilities have struggled to manage the patient influx, admitting 55,705 children for specialized care during this period. According to the health directorate, the recovery rate has been significant, with 52,050 children discharged after receiving treatment. Official data also highlights that 8,996 cases have been formally diagnosed as measles since the onset of the outbreak in March.
