Flooding occurs in Brahmanbaria district town with little rain. Various roads are submerged in water. On Monday afternoon, 40 minutes of rain has accumulated water in various streets of the city, sometimes up to ankles, sometimes up to knees. In this way, ordinary people including pedestrians suffered due to sudden flooding.
According to several residents of the city, mismanagement of waste disposal and unplanned construction of drains lead to waterlogging in various areas of the city when there is little rain. It also takes a long time for the water to go down from the road. Out of 157 km of canals in the city, the condition of 90 km of canals is not good. However, the municipal authorities claim that the drains and reservoirs are filling up due to the city dwellers throwing garbage everywhere and causing waterlogging.

When the sky of the city was covered with dark clouds, it started raining around 12:30 pm on Monday. It rained heavily for about 40 minutes. Most of the roads in the city were submerged in water.
Later in the afternoon, it was seen around the city, the road in front of Zilla Parishad Market adjacent to Collegepara Level Crossing area, Kalibari Mor, TA Road, Kumarsheel Mor, Old Jail Road tank bank, Haldar Para Annada Govt High School area, Old Court Road, Kedas Mor, Munsefpara, Fulbaria, Madhya Medda, Kazipara, Sarkar Para have been flooded. The rain water mixed with dirt from the drain is dirty. People were seen crossing the road over this unhealthy water.

Lawyer Tarekul Islam Mridha said, “The city is becoming uninhabitable day by day.” The streets of this city are littered with garbage and the municipal authorities are silent. After half an hour of rain, various roads of the city were submerged in water. What are we getting citizen services? But I am paying taxes regularly.
According to municipal sources, there are 60 cleaners in Brahmanbaria municipality. There are 157 km of drains in 12 wards of the municipality. Out of this, 67 kilometers are in good condition. The condition of the 90 km canal is not good. 90 km of drains are blocked with garbage. There are 13 km of raw canals in the municipal area. The construction of several drains including the drains along the road in the border market area of the municipal area is going on. Apart from this, the construction of drains from Fulbaria, Haldarpara to the four-lane highway will start soon. A proposal has been sent to construct a drain from Kumarsheel junction to Medda police outpost. Once the budget is received, the process will begin.
According to municipal sources, the drain from in front of Brahmanbaria Zilla Parishad Market to Ghorapatti Bridge was earlier an RCC casting drain. A few years ago roads and thoroughfares turned it into a pipe drain. But as the drains are blocked by dumped garbage and sand, even a little rain causes flooding in the city.
Brahmanbaria Municipal Deputy Assistant Engineer Suman Dutta told Prothom Alo that the condition of 67 km out of 157 km of drains is good. Due to lack of cleanliness, the remaining drains are filled with dirt. There is also a shortage of cleaners. The construction of drains is going on along the roads of different areas of the city, the construction of some drains will start. A few canal proposals have been sent. The work will start after receiving the budget.
Municipal Administrator and Deputy Director of Local Government Department Shariful Islam told Prothom Alo that the road and public road pipe drains from the front of Zilla Parishad to TA Road have been filled with garbage and sand. The municipality does not have the equipment to clean it. The matter has been discussed with the Souza authorities. Initiatives have been taken to clean the drains. City dwellers will get solution to these problems soon.
