Manikganj accused of stealing fish, youth ‘beaten’, body found later

The hanging body of a young man was recovered from the office of the management committee of a market in Manikganj Sadar Upazila on Wednesday evening. Earlier it has been alleged that the youth named Krishna Rajvanshi (35) was arrested and beaten up on the charge of stealing fish.

According to Sadar police station and local sources, on Wednesday morning, two people including Krishna Rajbanshi were arrested by the market management committee on charges of stealing fish from Tara Fish Market in Sadar Upazila. Later, one of them was appointed as the president of market management. Although released in Ibrahim’s custody, Krishna Rajvanshi was beaten and detained in the committee’s office. Sometime between morning and noon, he committed suicide by twisting a towel with a fan inside the office.

Two local persons, who did not wish to be named, said that at noon the committee opened the lock and went inside to find the young man hanging from the fan. After that, the committee people tried to take the body to the hospital. At that time, the people of the market management committee left when the local people stopped them. After receiving the information, the police recovered the body from the spot in the afternoon.

Chairman of the market management committee said at 8:30 pm. Ibrahim did not pick up several calls to his mobile phone.

However, Belal Hossain, general secretary of the committee, said that he had heard that two people had been arrested for stealing fish. Later he heard that the guardians would take them on their own responsibility. One was released. The guardian of the other (Krishna) was detained for non-appearance. He later heard that he had committed suicide.

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikram Hossain said that the body was recovered and sent to Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The OC said that it is the responsibility of the people of the market management committee to inform the police after detaining them on suspicion of theft or theft. But he was detained without doing so. The matter is being investigated.
