Woman dies nine days after IED explosion in Barishals Bakerganj village

A 50-year-old woman, Hanufa Begum, has died from severe burn injuries sustained in an explosion in Bakerganj, Barishal. She passed away at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, nine days after the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Bakerganj Police Station, Adil Hossain, confirmed the fatality. The incident, which occurred on the morning of August 3 in Dudhalmou village of Bhorpasha Union, also left Hanufa Begum’s daughter, 18-year-old Eti Akhter, and grandson, 15-year-old Fahim, severely injured. Family members report that Fahim remains in critical condition.
The blast occurred when Eti Akhter and her nephew, Fahim, were in their courtyard. Eti Akhter previously stated that they discovered three red potato chip packets tied to a string, connected to a shopping bag. As they approached the objects, she slipped on the mud, triggering a powerful explosion that engulfed them in flames. In a desperate attempt to extinguish the fire, the three victims jumped into a nearby river.
A bomb disposal unit from Dhaka subsequently identified the device as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) equipped with a booby trap mechanism. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Hanufa Begum’s son, Jamal Hossain, filed a case against unidentified individuals at the Bakerganj Police Station on August 4. As of Wednesday evening, police confirmed that no suspects have been arrested.
Barishal District Administrator Mamun Khandaker stated that the district and divisional administration have been monitoring the victims’ treatment since they were transferred to Dhaka. He confirmed that the administration will cover all medical expenses for the survivors and manage the costs associated with transporting Hanufa Begum’s body back to Barishal.
Jamal Hossain, the victim’s younger son, is currently en route to Dhaka. He expressed profound grief, noting that the family had already lost their father, Shah Alam Hawladar, and relied on his mother for stability. While his sister, Eti, is showing signs of recovery, the family remains deeply concerned about the prognosis for his nephew, Fahim.
