Mentally ill man hospitalized after being tied to utility pole and burned with acid in Satkhira

A mentally challenged man remains hospitalized with severe burns after being tied to an electric pole and allegedly subjected to a chemical attack in Kalaroa Upazila, Satkhira. The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 10 in the West Para area of Mirzapur village.

The victim, 38-year-old Golam Rasul Sheikh, is currently receiving treatment at Satkhira Medical College Hospital. His elder brother, Abdul Gafur Sheikh, filed a formal case on August 15 against four neighbors: Jim Hossain, 22; Moni, 35; Popy Khatun, 42; and Sekendar Ali, 62.

According to the case files, the accused intercepted Golam Rasul as he passed their residence, tied him to an electric pole with a rope, and beat him with sticks. During the assault, the attackers allegedly poured an acid-like chemical substance on his hands, causing severe burns. A video of the physical assault has surfaced on social media, showing the victim being struck with pipes, though the footage does not capture the moment the chemical was applied.

Dr. Bappi Kumar Das, Resident Medical Officer at Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex, where the victim was initially treated, confirmed that Golam Rasul suffered from extensive burns on his hands and lacerations on his legs. Due to the lack of a specialized burn unit at the local facility, he was referred to Satkhira Medical College Hospital for urgent care. The victim’s family has been informed that surgery on his hands may be required.

In his defense, the primary accused, Jim Hossain, denied the allegations through a representative, claiming that the victim frequently harassed their household. However, the victim’s brother, Abdul Gafur Sheikh, condemned the vigilante justice, stating that if his brother had committed any wrongdoing, the accused should have involved law enforcement rather than resorting to torture. He further expressed frustration that police have yet to make any arrests despite the case being filed days ago.

Kalaroa Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) H.M. Shahin stated that investigators are reviewing the video evidence and are awaiting expert analysis to confirm the nature of the chemical used. He confirmed that the four suspects have fled the area and that police operations are underway to apprehend them.
