Manikganj Assistant Sub-Inspector withdrawn following allegations of robbing youth

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Harirampur Police Station in Manikganj has been withdrawn from his post and attached to the district police lines following allegations of extortion. The disciplinary action against ASI Sohel Rana follows reports that he and an alleged police informant forcibly seized money from a local youth.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Pipulia area of Balra Union. According to the victim, 20-year-old Tayef Hossain, he was traveling by motorcycle toward the upazila headquarters when he was intercepted by ASI Rana and 28-year-old Alamgir Hossain, a resident of Karmakarkandi Boyra village.

The victim stated that the suspects identified themselves as police personnel before seizing his motorcycle keys and mobile phone. Tayef alleged that he was subjected to physical abuse and a humiliating body search under the pretext of an anti-narcotics operation. Although his mobile phone was returned, the suspects reportedly confiscated 2,600 taka before fleeing the scene in an easy bike.

Following the confrontation, Tayef and his associates pursued the pair. They eventually located them in front of the Harukandi Union Parishad office. While ASI Rana managed to escape on his motorcycle, local residents apprehended Alamgir. He was subsequently taken into police custody. During questioning, Alamgir reportedly claimed that he had stopped the victim and seized the items under the direct orders of the assistant sub-inspector.

Harirampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Afzal Hossain confirmed that ASI Rana was withdrawn for conducting an unauthorized operation without notifying his superiors. The officer noted that while no formal written complaint has been filed against Alamgir, police are preparing to present him before the court under Section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Attempts to reach ASI Sohel Rana for comment on Wednesday morning were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained powered off. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
