Bangladesh police leadership has issued high-alert directives across the country following a series of recent incidents involving the recovery of explosives and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Law enforcement personnel have been instructed to intensify patrols, establish security checkpoints, and conduct rigorous searches of both individuals and vehicles to preempt potential attacks.
These directives were issued on Thursday during a special law and order conference and the monthly crime review meeting of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), held at the Bangladesh Police Lines auditorium in Rajarbagh. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed presided over the proceedings. Multiple senior officials confirmed the developments, noting that the recent discovery of explosives poses a significant new challenge to national security.
The IGP emphasized that maintaining law and order in the capital is essential for national stability, given the presence of foreign diplomats and international residents. He noted that beyond traditional criminal activities, the force is facing escalating challenges from cybercrime, rumors, and the spread of misinformation on social media platforms.
Security protocols have been tightened following several high-profile incidents. On July 24, a bomb was discovered inside an umbrella at a metro rail station in Motijheel. Subsequently, on Tuesday night, the DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit recovered 11 pipe bombs and a large cache of explosives, leading to the arrest of a suspect identified as Mohammad Arif. Based on intelligence provided by the suspect, officers later recovered an IED concealed inside a pressure cooker in the Sadhupur area of Savar.
In response to these threats, police commanders have ordered increased intelligence surveillance to counter extremist activities. Field officers have been instructed to revitalize community policing and beat policing initiatives to better track the movements of suspicious individuals and groups. Furthermore, the command has prioritized the safety of police personnel and assets, citing potential risks of attacks against the force.
During the meeting, which was attended by officers ranging from police station heads to senior crime department officials, the DMP Commissioner reiterated a zero-tolerance policy regarding narcotics. He also mandated effective measures to curb illicit activities in hotels and spa centers and ordered 24-hour surveillance to prevent street muggings. As part of the session, the DMP recognized and rewarded officers for outstanding performance in law enforcement and crime control throughout the previous month.
