IPL Poised to Redefine Cricketer Earnings, Founder Modi Predicts

Indian Premier League (IPL) founder Lalit Modi has projected that top cricketers could earn upwards of 1 billion Indian rupees ($12 million USD) annually from the tournament by 2030, asserting the league’s unparalleled dominance in the T20 franchise landscape.

Modi, who spearheaded the inception of the globally renowned T20 competition, expressed strong optimism for the IPL’s future trajectory. He anticipates the league will reach unprecedented heights within the next decade, with individual player earnings soaring to 1 billion rupees. This anticipated surge in player remuneration is expected to coincide with a significant increase in revenue for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Currently, leading cricketers can command match fees of approximately 85 million rupees ($1 million USD), with the most valuable players on franchise rosters potentially earning between 1.3 billion and 1.5 billion rupees ($15 million to $18 million USD) per year.

Modi’s projections come in response to recent commentary from former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who suggested on X (formerly Twitter) that the Hundred, England’s domestic T20 competition, could become a major T20 league within three years, potentially emulating the IPL’s success.

Dismissing such comparisons, Modi firmly stated that no other T20 tournament can rival the IPL. He reiterated his expectation that by 2030, top-tier players’ annual earnings could escalate to 9.32 billion rupees ($112 million USD), a financial benchmark he deems unattainable for any other T20 franchise league worldwide.
