Female head coach in men’s team

34-year-old Marie-Louise has been appointed as interim head coach of German Bundesliga club Union Berlin. In this, she made history as the first woman head coach of the men’s team in Europe.

Union Berlin lost 3-1 to bottom of the points table FC Heidenheim on Saturday. After this loss, coach Stephen Baumgart was dismissed by the club authorities. Although they are currently at number 11 in the league table, they have won only 2 of the 14 matches played in 2026. Despite being 11 points away from the relegation zone, the board is worried about the failure of the team. So Marie-Louise has been given the big responsibility of leading the team for the remaining 5 matches of the season.

Making history is nothing new for Marie-Louise. In November 2023, she became the first female assistant coach of the Bundesliga when she was appointed as an assistant coach of Union Berlin. Marie-Louise even led the team in the dugout against Darmstadt in January 2024 when head coach Neland Bielica was banned.

The former German youth international and Women’s Champions League winner for Turbine Potsdam has been the manager of Union Berlin’s under-19 team since July 2025. At the end of the current season, he will also take over as the head coach of the club’s women’s football team.

After taking charge, Marie-Louise said, ‘The gap at the bottom of the points table is not very big, so our position in the Bundesliga is not yet completely secure. I am delighted with the trust the club has placed in me. I believe we can get the points we need to stay in the league.
