Businessman dies from snakebite in Jamalpur despite receiving antivenom treatment
A 55-year-old hardware businessman, Motahar Hossain, died on Saturday following a venomous snake bite in the Banikunj area of Madarganj municipality in Jamalpur. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. while the victim was working in his paddy field. Hossain, a resident of the Bepari Para neighborhood and son of the late Naim Uddin, operated a business at the Jonail Bazar.
Family members reported that Hossain was applying pesticides to his crops when he was bitten on the leg. He immediately alerted his cousin, Nazrul Islam, who assisted in transporting him to the Madarganj Upazila Health Complex. Medical staff at the facility administered antivenom after conducting initial examinations to address the bite.
Despite the medical intervention, Hossain’s condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting doctors to refer him to the Jamalpur General Hospital for advanced treatment. He succumbed to the effects of the venom while in transit to the facility. Upon arrival at the Jamalpur General Hospital, attending physicians officially declared him dead.
Dr. Kamrunnahar, a medical officer at the Madarganj Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the administration of antivenom and the subsequent referral due to the patient's declining health. The victim’s cousin, Nazrul Islam, noted that despite the swift response in seeking medical help, the severity of the bite proved fatal.
Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Snehashish Roy, officer-in-charge of the Madarganj Model Police Station, confirmed that officers were dispatched to the victim's residence. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
