Worker Dies in Electric Trap Set for Wildlife at Lemon Orchard

A laborer died after coming into contact with an electrified fence intended to deter wildlife from a lemon orchard in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar. Sunil Santal, 35, was found entangled in the live wires early Monday morning behind the Radhanagar Community Clinic on a lemon plantation owned by Jorif Mia.
Santal, the sole breadwinner for his family of two young daughters aged seven and five, resided in the Radhanagar slum area. He had gone to the adjacent lemon orchard to cut grass for his cattle around dawn. When he failed to return home by 9:30 a.m., his family and neighbors began searching for him. His body was discovered among the electrified wires within the orchard, prompting an alert to the police. Sreemangal police arrived at the scene and recovered the body.

According to local accounts and the victim’s family, the electrified fencing was installed around the orchard using GI wires and an earthing system to protect crops from wild boars and other animals. However, no warnings or prior announcements were made to nearby residents regarding the presence of these traps.
The lemon orchard is leased by a local individual named Ali Arjun, who has reportedly been unavailable since the incident.

“We received information from local residents and recovered a body from a lemon orchard in the Radhanagar area,” said Md. Jahirul Islam (Munna), Officer-in-Charge of Sreemangal Police Station, speaking to Prothom Alo. “The initial assumption is that he was electrocuted while cutting grass early in the morning. However, the exact circumstances will be confirmed after an investigation. Legal action will be taken based on the autopsy report and any complaints filed by the deceased’s family.”
