Woman killed, scores injured in violent land dispute between Comilla villages

A violent territorial dispute over newly formed land in the Kathalia River left one woman dead and at least 60 others injured on Sunday, as residents from five villages in Cumilla clashed in a brutal confrontation.
The victim, 35-year-old Kohinoor Akter of Char Binodpur village, was struck by a traditional spear known as a “teta” during the fighting. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Meghna Upazila Health Complex. According to medical staff, the facility treated 28 individuals for various injuries sustained during the afternoon skirmish, with the most severely wounded patients transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for surgical removal of spearheads.

The conflict originated from long-standing tensions between residents of Meghna’s Char Binodpur village and those from the Titas Upazila villages of Nandirchar, Dudhghata, and the Batara settlements. Char Binodpur residents claim legal ownership of the emerging river land based on two decades of paid land taxes. The situation escalated Sunday evening when two individuals from Nandirchar attempted to secure official title deeds for the land, prompting immediate resistance from locals in Char Binodpur and Alipur.
Witnesses reported that the thwarted land claim led to a retaliatory organized attack, as residents from the neighboring villages descended upon Char Binodpur. The ensuing chaos saw the destruction of more than 50 homes and widespread use of traditional weapons. Residents described a night of terror, expressing deep concerns over their ongoing safety as local tensions remain high.

Local officials and village representatives noted that this incident marks the violent culmination of a months-long feud over the disputed territory. While local authorities from Titas and Meghna have attempted to mediate the land rights issues previously, the situation has now turned lethal.
Meghna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahidul Islam confirmed that police arrived on the scene late Sunday to restore order. The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into the incident and pledged to pursue legal action against those responsible for the violence.
