Wife Among 11 Charged in Murder of Dhaka Police Constable

A Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) constable, Humayun Kabir, who served as a driver for the force’s transport division, was the victim of a premeditated murder orchestrated by his own wife and a network of accomplices. The investigation into his death, which occurred in April 2025, has culminated in formal charges against 11 individuals, according to a report by the Jatrabari Police Station.

Kabir’s body was discovered on April 28, 2025, outside his residence in Doyaganj, Old Dhaka. While initial reports suggested a suspicious death, subsequent police inquiries revealed a deep-seated conspiracy driven by an illicit affair and a significant financial dispute. Court records indicate that Kabir’s wife, Salma Begum, had been involved in a relationship with a relative, Rajib Hossain, for approximately a year. The discovery of this affair had led to a family mediation hearing just days before the murder, during which Salma allegedly promised to end the relationship.

The motive was compounded by an unpaid loan. A relative of the victim’s wife, Mariam Begum, had borrowed 10 lakh taka from Kabir, which remained unreturned. According to the charge sheet submitted by investigation officer Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain in March, the murder was a calculated effort to eliminate Kabir, thereby removing an obstacle to the affair and absolving the parties of the debt.

The planning for the killing spanned two months, during which the conspirators failed on several occasions to execute the act. The final plan involved drugging Kabir’s food with sedatives. Once he was incapacitated, the group entered the home, bound his hands and feet, and strangled him with a rope. To stage the scene, they transported his body from the third floor and left it at the building’s gate, hoping to conceal Salma’s involvement by locking the apartment from the outside.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haq formally took the charge sheet into cognizance on July 1. Of the 11 defendants, Salma Begum, Pori Begum, and Rafi Khan are currently in custody, while others, including Rajib Hossain, Mariam Begum, Kayes Howlader, and Fazle Rabbi Shuvo, are out on bail. Four suspects—Akash, Ashik, Sajib, and Sabbir—remain at large, and the court has issued warrants for their arrest.

The investigation revealed that the group had even secured tools for the murder, including a machete, rope, and gloves, and had promised the hired participants payment from Kabir’s impending pension funds. As the judicial process begins, authorities state that the forensic evidence and the suspects’ own confessions, obtained during rigorous interrogation, form the basis of the prosecution’s case. The court has scheduled the next hearing regarding the absconding suspects for August 13.
