Wanted Dhaka BNP leader spotted at police event despite outstanding arrest warrant

A senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Dhaka, who is currently the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant in a fraud case, has remained at large for six months despite frequently appearing at high-profile public events, including those hosted by the police. Ali Ahmed, joint convener of the Rupnagar Thana BNP, is wanted by a Bogura court for the alleged misappropriation of approximately 14.9 million taka in a business investment dispute.
The case, filed on November 29 last year by Bogura resident Md. Mostak Tasin, identifies Ahmed as the managing director of Twintex Industries Ltd. Court records indicate that a warrant was issued on January 1. According to documentation from the Bogura judiciary, Ahmed is embroiled in eight separate legal proceedings in the district, including one in which he has already been convicted. On May 4, a public notice was issued directing him to appear before the court within 15 days, a deadline he failed to meet.

Despite the active warrant being forwarded to the Turag Police Station—where Ahmed resides—the suspect has continued to operate in public view. In a notable display of this visibility, Ahmed was photographed on April 28 on the dais of an “Open House Day” event organized by the Rupnagar police. The gathering, attended by State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel and senior officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has drawn sharp criticism from the plaintiff, who alleges that political influence is shielding Ahmed from justice.
The plaintiff claims to have contacted local law enforcement repeatedly and filed a formal complaint with police headquarters on March 9, yet no arrest has been made. In his petition to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the complainant alleged that the officer-in-charge of the Turag Police Station has consistently provided excuses to avoid executing the warrant, effectively granting the accused impunity due to his political standing.

When questioned, Turag Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman denied knowledge of the situation, asserting that political affiliation provides no protection against criminal prosecution. He emphasized that while there are specific protocols for politically motivated cases, there is no legal avenue to ignore warrants related to financial crimes or general criminal offenses.
Ahmed, however, disputes the circumstances of the case. In a statement provided to the media, he claimed he was unaware of the legal proceedings until recently, alleging that the plaintiff had deliberately concealed the court filings. He stated that upon learning of the warrant from police last week, he initiated an application for anticipatory bail at the High Court and attempted to surrender before the lower court in Bogura. The plaintiff remains skeptical of these claims, expressing concern that the police inaction has emboldened Ahmed to issue threats against him.
