Measles in two children in Chittagong, samples of 40 people in Dhaka
Two children have been diagnosed with measles in the last one week in Chittagong. Currently, one child is admitted in Chittagong Medical College Hospital and the other child is admitted in Chittagong Mother and Child General Hospital. Including these two children, 28 children are admitted in different hospitals with symptoms of measles. The civil surgeon's office said that a total of 40 samples were collected in the district and sent to Dhaka.
According to Chittagong district civil office sources, a five-and-a-half-month-old child diagnosed with measles is admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. He comes from Boalkhali upazila. Another five-month-old child lives in Hathazari. She is undergoing treatment at Chittagong Mother and Child General Hospital.
Chittagong Medical College Hospital said that 18 people have been admitted in the child health department in the last one week. Measles has already been detected in one of them. Samples of the remaining 17 have been sent to Dhaka. On the other hand, there are 9 more people with measles symptoms in Mother and Child Hospital and one in Chittagong General Hospital.
District Civil Surgeon. Jahangir Alam said, samples of 40 people were collected from different hospitals and sent to Dhaka for testing. Among them, 28 people are admitted in three hospitals of Chittagong. The remaining 12 have been taken home.
According to a source of donor organizations, measles was first detected in the Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar on January 4 this year. A warning was issued in the camp area on January 10. Bangladesh is not a measles-free country, but the incidence of measles has decreased due to vaccination programs. Public health experts believe that many children are not receiving regular vaccinations. Besides, there is no measles and rubella vaccination program in the country for several years. Because of this there has been an outbreak of measles. 41 children died of measles in the country this month.
The head of the department, Mohammad Mucha Miya, said that most of the children admitted to the Child Health Department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital with symptoms of measles are under 15 months old. He said, rash, fever and pneumonia were seen in many of the admitted children. They are being treated in a separate measles corner of the children's ward.
