Two workers critically injured in Rajbari boiler explosion amid licensing concerns

Two workers were critically injured in a boiler explosion at a furnace oil production plant in Goalanda, Rajbari, on Thursday morning, sparking renewed scrutiny over the facility’s safety and regulatory compliance.
The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. at the Dhaka Pyrolysis Company plant in the Bishwanath Para area of Ujanchar Union. The victims, identified as 24-year-old Sohel Rana from Gaibandha and 16-year-old Shawon Munda from Moulvibazar, were performing their daily tasks of burning tires to extract oil and carbon when the boiler ruptured.

Local residents and fellow workers pulled the injured men from the wreckage and rushed them to the Goalanda Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of their burns, both were subsequently transferred to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. Abdur Razzak, a supervisor at the plant, confirmed the transfer and stated that the victims are receiving specialized care.
The accident has brought significant administrative pressure on the company, which has faced long-standing allegations of environmental violations. Residents have frequently complained that the facility processes waste tires in a manner that causes severe pollution, frequently operating in breach of the environmental conditions mandated by the Department of Environment.

While the plant initially secured government authorization, its legal standing is now in question. Rajbari’s Department of Environment inspector, Imran Hossain, confirmed that the facility’s permit expired in August 2025. Although the management has applied for a renewal, the application remains pending due to incomplete documentation.
Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sathi Das stated that authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Acknowledging the history of complaints regarding environmental damage and regulatory non-compliance, the UNO confirmed that the Department of Environment has been directed to provide a comprehensive report on the plant’s status. Officials have indicated that an inspection and potential enforcement action will be launched in the immediate future.
