Two Local Political Leaders Arrested in Dhaka for Gold Snatching Near International Airport

Police have arrested two local political leaders in connection with the robbery of gold jewelry near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The suspects were identified as Al Amin Shanto, general secretary of the Airport Thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), and Abdur Rouf, president of the Airport unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Officials confirmed that 100 grams of the stolen gold were recovered during the operation. Airport Thana police conducted raids on Saturday night and Sunday evening to apprehend the suspects following a formal complaint filed by Md. Suman, a resident of the Raipura Upazila in Narsingdi district.
Mirza Tareq Ahmed Beg, Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, stated that the robbery targeted gold sent from abroad by a migrant worker for his sister’s wedding. Authorities identified the suspects after analyzing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the area. While investigations into the suspects’ political affiliations are ongoing, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized that the law would be applied strictly regardless of political status, noting that they are being treated solely as criminal offenders.
According to police reports, the case was initiated on August 29. The initial complaint named several individuals, including Abdur Rouf, Airport Thana JCD President Ripon, General Secretary Al Amin Shanto, and Airport Ward BNP General Secretary Rubel.
The plaintiff, Md. Suman, stated in the case documents that his brother, Kawsar, who resides in Malaysia, sent 200 grams of gold jewelry for family use. Suman and his friend, Rohan Chowdhury, collected the package from a contact at the airport on the night of August 28. Shortly after boarding a rented microbus and disembarking near the Balaka Bhaban on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, the pair was surrounded by the suspects.
The complainant alleged that the assailants intimidated them by claiming to be affiliated with the Awami League and Chhatra League, further threatening them with fabricated claims of possessing bombs. After assaulting the victims, the suspects reportedly seized the 200 grams of gold and fled the scene as bystanders began to gather.
